CST 300 week 3

Part 1: https://www.academictips.org/acad/index.html

Something that I struggle with in school is note taking. One of the tips mentioned in the article that I thought was the most helpful is preparing for lectures. If students know what a lecture is about, they can prepare questions for their professor ahead of time. I think the most important benefit of this practice is that you can focus on taking notes on the material that you struggle with. This style of note taking would lead to less time spent writing and more time spent listening to the lecture. Additionally, this could help a student keep up in a lecture in a class where the professor teaches quickly. I feel like this kind of strategy has helped me get through harder classes in the past, and this is something I need to incorporate in routine more often.

Part 2: What I learned this week

While working on the scenario based ethics assignment, I had the opportunity to review Kantian Deontology and Utilitarianism. Seeing other students responses to this assignment provided different perspectives of the event covered in the assignment that I have not thought about before. The group project gave me an opportunity to research different types of roles in software development. I feel like I have a better understanding of computer networks and how it can tie in with back end software development now. Lastly, the peer reviews of my essay were very insightful. It has been a couple of years since I have had to write an essay like the industry analysis and the peer review comments I received were a good refresher of what I need to improve on.

This article covers many important topics that every computer science major should know. Some of these topics will be covered in our school's curriculum, but the things that are not should be researched on our own time. As I was reading through this, I often found myself looking up what topics were more than I would like to admit. I think this is was a good reminder to myself about the long but exciting road I have ahead of me in my studies. I also found myself wanting to tunnel deeper into certain topics but I did not have the time to at the moment since I had to finish the entire reading. I think that these interests I have may be areas of work I want to pursue after I am done with school. This page is definitely something I will save so I can treat this as a checklist of things I want to accomplish or to know well for the future. Having these important topics consolidated into one location will allow me to go back easily find things I need to improve on.

Part 4: Code of Integrity Reflect

Integrity is vital to ensuring that students are getting the most out of our educations. Since their is a considerable amount of group collaboration in the CSUMB curriculum, cheating not only deteriorates the quality of education a student receives, but also the quality of education group mates receive as well. Violating the integrity policy would also destroy the trust the faculty and other students have in someone that was caught cheating. While it is common for software developers to research problems they encounter, students do not gain this research and problem solving experience when they plagiarize code. From an ethical standpoint, I do not think it is appropriate to take the credit for someone else's code when it is used in your own assignments.
